Singing carols under a warm Tasmanian evening sky is one of those simple Christmas moments that sticks with you. Maybe it’s the way Tolosa Park fills with music, or the kids racing across the grass at Brighton Civic Centre with fairy floss in hand. Either way, Hobart’s northern suburbs do Christmas community events very well.
Because the 4one4 team spends most days in and around Glenorchy, Brighton, New Norfolk, and the wider northern corridor, we thought it was worth bringing the main Hobart Christmas carols 2025 events together in one handy place. Think carols, pageants, family days, and big city cathedral events – all within easy reach of home.
Always check the organiser’s website or socials before you go. Dates, times, and wet-weather plans can change quickly, especially with outdoor events.
Glenorchy: Variety Carols by Candlelight at Tolosa Park
If you’re picking just one big Christmas carols event near Glenorchy in 2025, it’s hard to go past this one.
Variety Carols by Candlelight returns to Tolosa Park in Glenorchy on Saturday 20 December 2025, with gates opening from 6:30pm and carols from 8:00–9:30pm. Hosted by Variety – the Children’s Charity Tasmania, it brings Matt Ives and his Big Band together with Tasmanian guest performers from stage, TV and radio for a proper “under the stars” Christmas night.

Picture this: picnic rugs spread across the Tolosa hill, kids waving glow sticks, adults catching up between songs and a special appearance from the man in the big red suit before the night wraps up.
Tickets are around $15 for adults, while children under 15 are free with a valid child ticket and an accompanying adult. All ticket proceeds support Tassie kids through Variety. You can check the latest details or grab tickets via Humanitix.
There is also a shorter Variety Kids Carols session at Tolosa Park on Friday 19 December 2025, which runs from around 4:00–5:15pm. It’s planned for younger families who prefer to be home well before bedtime, but still want that Christmas carols experience close to Glenorchy.

Brighton & Bridgewater: Community Carols and Pageant

Head up the Brooker and you’ll find Brighton and Bridgewater Christmas carols and a local pageant that draw a big community crowd each year.
First up is the Community Christmas Carols at the Brighton Civic Centre / McShane Road Oval (Jordan River Learning Federation Senior School). In 2025, it’s scheduled for Saturday 29 November, from about 5:30–8:00pm. Expect plenty of families on camp chairs and picnic rugs, local performers on stage, food stalls and that “everyone knows someone on the microphone” feel that small town carols do so well.
A week later, the Brighton Christmas Pageant is set to roll through the Bridgewater Parklands and Civic Centre precinct on Saturday 6 December 2025, mixing community groups, floats, music and daytime fun. It’s especially handy if you live in Brighton, Old Beach, Gagebrook or Bridgewater and prefer to stay local rather than heading into the Hobart CBD.
Keep an eye on Brighton Council and Brighton Community News channels for final routes, times and any last-minute changes.
Derwent Valley & New Norfolk: Carols, Parades and Kids’ Fun
Further along the river, the Derwent Valley Christmas events scene usually feels packed from late November through December, with markets, pageants and carols dotted through New Norfolk and nearby towns.
One of the key family days is the Ptunarra Christmas Party 2025, hosted at the Ptunarra Child & Family Centre for Derwent Valley families with children aged 0–5. It’s planned for Thursday 11 December, from 10:30am–1:00pm, and includes food, carols, children’s activities and a Santa visit.

Then there’s the Derwent Valley Carols by Candlelight in New Norfolk, run by the local Lions Club. Over the years it has grown from a small get-together into one of the bigger regional Christmas carols nights in southern Tasmania, with staging, sound and plenty of local volunteers involved. It will be happening this year on the 6th December, Friday, but make sure to keep watch on Lions, Rotary and council pages for the other exciting details.
If you’re curious about moving to New Norfolk or the wider Derwent Valley, it can be useful to combine a carols night with a quick look at nearby streets, parks and local shops. Hobart City & Eastern Shore: Cathedral Carols and Community Events
For those happy to head into the city or over the river, there are some bigger Hobart Christmas carols 2025 options too.
One of the standouts is Carols at St Mary’s, held at St Mary’s Cathedral in Harrington Street on Saturday 13 December 2025, with gates opening from 5:30pm. It’s a large outdoor event with live music, choir performances, food vans serving everything from hot chocolate and donuts to pizza and paella, and a big lawn area where families can spread out on blankets.

On top of that, the City of Hobart runs a Community Christmas Carols Grant Program that funds a series of smaller carol events across the municipality every December. In 2025, that includes gatherings such as “Christmas at C3 Beyond” at C3 Church Beyond in South Hobart, plus several other church- and community-run carols nights across suburbs including New Town, Lenah Valley and the Eastern Shore.
For the latest list, head to the City of Hobart Christmas page, which is updated through the season with carols, markets, and other Christmas activities. Local church networks such as Tas Baptists are also useful if you’re hunting for smaller carols events in spots like Bellerive, Mornington, and beyond.
How to Make the Most of Local Carols This Year
You can definitely turn a simple carols night into a yearly ritual with a little planning.
One idea is to make it a neighbourhood outing. Invite a few neighbours, share the driving, and bring a mix of picnic food and event treats. Before long, you’ve got an annual “street carols night” that everyone looks forward to.

Another easy win is to support the stallholders and community groups on site. Many of these Hobart and northern suburbs Christmas carols events raise funds for Variety, Lions, Rotary, school communities, or local charities. Buying a sausage, raffle ticket, or a few glow sticks might feel small, but it helps keep these local celebrations going.
You can also use carols as a way to explore a new suburb. If you usually stick close to Glenorchy, try heading up to Brighton or across to New Norfolk for a different feel. If you’re thinking about a move in 2026, it’s a simple way to see how an area looks at night, how people use the parks, and how the local community comes together.
