What if the weekend never had to end?

Orford Tasmania coastal landscape and East Coast lifestyle

You can feel the shift before you arrive in Orford.

It might be a Friday afternoon, with a few bags in the back of the car and the week still rattling around in your head. Then the road opens up, the water appears between the hills, and you remember why you keep making this trip.

Orford has a way of making an ordinary weekend feel like a proper getaway. And because it is only about an hour from Hobart, getting there can be as simple as deciding to go.

This spring, two new Orford homes with 4one4 Property Co. make the familiar East Coast daydream a little more tangible. 14 East Shelly Road has the space to bring the whole crew, with beach access directly opposite. 20 Erica Street offers a different rhythm: walk into town, wander to the water, and come home to a private upstairs retreat with a bay outlook.

They are two very different homes. Together, they raise a rather good question:

What if the East Coast became part of your everyday life?

The East Coast has a way of changing the plan

For a lot of Tasmanians, the East Coast is tied to good memories. Beach towels drying over the fence. Fishing gear left by the door. Lunch that stretches into the afternoon because nobody is in a hurry to be anywhere else.

Orford gives you a lovely starting point for making more of those days.

Stay in town and you can head to the beach, launch the boat, play golf or take the coastal walk from East Shelly Beach towards Spring Beach. You can have a full day out. You can also find a sunny spot and decide that doing very little is exactly what you came for.

When you feel like travelling further, Triabunna is about ten minutes to the north, with the ferry to Maria Island National Park. Swansea, Great Oyster Bay, vineyards and local produce lie further along the coast. Keep following the Great Eastern Drive and eventually you reach Coles Bay, Freycinet, and Wineglass Bay.

The pleasure of having the East Coast so close is that none of it needs to be an annual holiday plan. A walk can happen after breakfast. A trip to Maria Island can be pencilled into a free weekend. Friends can come down for lunch and stay until the light starts to change.

And sometimes the best plan is to stay in Orford.

Close enough for Friday. Tempting enough for longer.

Orford is around 80 kilometres, or approximately one hour’s drive, from Hobart. Of course, travel times depend on the day and your route. Even so, that distance is a big part of Orford’s appeal.

If you want a weekender, you can use it without turning every visit into a carefully organised expedition. Finish work, pack the car, and be there in time to enjoy Friday evening. If Saturday’s weather looks too good to spend at home, you can make the call that morning.

If you are thinking about living on the coast, Hobart remains close enough for some people to commute, particularly when work does not require a trip into town every day. Family, appointments, and the rest of city life are still within reach.

That flexibility makes Orford interesting. It can be the place you escape to, or the place you return home to after a day elsewhere. Either way, the beach does not have to wait for your next holiday.

One Orford home where everyone can come along

There is a particular kind of East Coast weekend that begins with “just us” and ends with children, friends, grandparents, bikes, fishing rods, and someone asking where the extra beach towels are.

14 East Shelly Road has room for that version of life.

The original dwelling sits at the front, while a substantial rear extension has added the space for everyone to spend time together and find a corner of their own. There are five bedrooms, multiple living areas and a generous kitchen and dining space that feels ready for the noisy, happy part of a day back from the beach.

Outside, the 1,358m² block offers a big backyard, established fruit trees, a netted garden and multiple sheds. There is space for children and pets, along with the boats, bikes and other gear that seem to arrive once the East Coast becomes a regular part of your life. At the end of the day, the outdoor spaces and fire pot invite everyone back together.

The beach is woven into the everyday here. A public access walkway sits directly opposite, putting East Shelly Beach approximately 400 metres away. Going for a swim hardly needs a plan.

Another where you can put the car keys down

At 20 Erica Street, the appeal is in how easily Orford fits around your day.

You can walk to the IGA for something you forgot, meet someone for coffee, head to the pub or make your way to the waterfront and boat ramp. The golf course is nearby, and the coast leads you towards Shelly Beach and Spring Beach. You might arrive on Friday and realise on Sunday that the car has barely moved.

The home itself offers room to settle in. Downstairs, a light-filled kitchen, dining and living area opens to a sheltered timber deck, with two bedrooms close by. Upstairs, the master retreat takes the whole level. There is space to read, work quietly or simply enjoy a morning coffee on the private deck looking out across the bay.

A paved courtyard and elevated deck give you more ways to spend summer afternoons outside. The powered shed, with water, plumbing and a second bathroom facility, is a particularly practical extra when you come home sandy from the beach or out on the boat.

It is easy to picture this one as a low-fuss East Coast escape. It is just as easy to imagine walking into town on an ordinary Tuesday and thinking, this is home.

Maybe the question has changed

The East Coast will always be a beautiful place to visit. What makes Orford special is how easy it is to imagine spending more time there.

For one person, that means a place where the whole family can gather near the beach. For another, it means walking to the shops, knowing the water is close, and having Hobart within reach when needed. Some will want a home for weekends and summers. Others might be ready to make the move.

The Sunday afternoon question is usually, “When can we come back?”

Perhaps this summer it becomes, “What if we stayed?”

Take a closer look at 14 East Shelly Road and 20 Erica Street. Then spend a little time in Orford. Walk by the water, grab a coffee, and see which version of the East Coast you can picture yourself coming home to.
