And Glenorchy isn’t exactly easing back into things quietly either.

There’s free swimming, a huge community Pool Party, a newly upgraded 50-metre pool, and, most importantly, the return of one of the northern suburbs’ most recognisable local institutions.

A Glenorchy favourite returns

If you grew up anywhere around Glenorchy, Moonah, West Moonah, Montrose, Claremont, or Hobart’s northern suburbs, there’s a pretty good chance the Glenorchy Pool already holds a few memories.

School swimming carnivals.

Hot chips by the pool.

Learning to dive.

Summer afternoons that somehow disappeared in what felt like five minutes.

Or those dedicated locals knocking out laps in the morning before most of us had even considered getting out of bed.

The Glenorchy War Memorial Pool first opened in the 1960s and has been part of the local community for more than 60 years.

Ask a Glenorchy local about the pool and chances are there’s a story attached to it.

Which is why seeing those gates open again feels like a little more than simply having somewhere to go for a swim.

When does Glenorchy Pool reopen?

The Glenorchy War Memorial Pool officially reopens to the public from 6:30am on Thursday 1 October 2026.

There will actually be 25 lucky locals making the very first splash from 6am as part of Council’s reopening competition, before the gates open to everyone else half an hour later.

For everyone who has driven past over the last few years wondering when they might finally see people back in the water…

October 1 is the day.

So, what’s new at the Glenorchy Pool?

Plenty will still feel familiar, but the pool has undergone a significant redevelopment before reopening.

The centrepiece remains the 50-metre outdoor pool, which is now heated to approximately 26–28°C and features a new gradual access ramp with handrails, making getting in and out of the water easier for more members of the community.

There are also new changerooms, improvements to the grandstand, and a refurbished reception area.

Around the facility, visitors will find the kids’ splash pool, lap swimming lanes, shaded seating, kiosk, BBQ, and picnic spaces and accessible entry points.

In other words, it is still very much our Glenorchy Pool.

It has just had a pretty serious freshen-up.

Free entry and a big Glenorchy Pool Party

If a 6:30am Thursday swim isn’t quite your style, Saturday might be more your speed.

Glenorchy City Council is holding a Community Pool Party on Saturday 3 October from 10am to 2pm to celebrate the return properly.

There’ll be live music, games and activities, giveaways, a free BBQ, and plenty happening around the pool throughout the day.

Even better, pool entry will be free across both Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October.

There will also be the option to make a gold coin donation to the Belgravia Foundation, with Glenorchy City Council matching the money raised to help support access to sport, recreation, fitness, and health programs.

For families wondering what to do that weekend, this one feels like a fairly easy addition to the calendar.

What does it cost to swim at Glenorchy Pool?

Once the reopening celebrations are over, regular 2026 casual entry prices apply.

Adults: $7.40
Children aged 4–15: $5.90
Concession: $5.90
Children aged 3 and under: FREE
Family – 2 adults + 2 children: $24.60
Non-swimming adult spectator: $2.00

Twenty-visit passes and full-season passes are also available for those planning to make the pool a regular part of their summer.

And after three years without it, we suspect there might be a few Glenorchy families planning exactly that.

More than just a swimming pool

This might be our favourite part of the whole story.

At 4one4, we spend a lot of our days talking about houses, property, and suburbs.

But what makes somewhere a genuinely great place to live has never just been the house itself.

It’s the park down the road.

The local footy club.

The bakery that knows your order.

The playground where the kids somehow always find someone they know.

The schools, shops, walking tracks, and community spaces that slowly become part of everyday life.

And yes…

the local swimming pool.

These are the places where kids learn new things, families spend time together, friendships are made, and communities actually get to be communities.

For generations of Glenorchy locals, the War Memorial Pool has been one of those places.

So seeing it return isn’t just good news for swimmers. It’s good news for Glenorchy.

The Glenorchy War Memorial Pool will operate across the warmer months and offers more than casual swimming.

Programs advertised for the new season include lap swimming, GOswim swimming lessons, Aqua Aerobics, and children’s birthday parties, alongside the splash pool and family facilities.

So whether your plan involves smashing out 20 laps before work…

Teaching the kids to swim…

Claiming a patch of grass on a summer afternoon…

Or simply going back for the first time in years to see what has changed…

It won’t be long now.
