COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT // Luna Chan

A FUSION OF FLAVOURS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!

Sautéed with the perfect mix of talent and determination added with some ingredients of love for the craft, a unique recipe of business was warmly served for the locals of Moonah. With the goal of bringing an out of the ordinary taste to the community, Luna Chan caught the attention of those who wish to try something new without compromising the quality.

Luna Chan is a modern style restaurant that offers Asian Fusion dishes in a street food vibe. Since its opening in the latter part of May this year, people have been loving the Asian food dining experience which is something new to the community of Moonah.

We were lucky to bump into Cyrus Chan, co-owner of Luna Chan, where he shared their “secret” ingredients in putting up such a fantastic business (keep reading for the revelation). Along with his wife, Eva, he runs the restaurant with the aim of providing a fun and family-friendly dine-in experience for their customers with their modern Asian cuisine. Cyrus explained he and his wife wanted to share the Asian culture (particularly Taiwanese) with a modern twist in the Australian market.

When asked what made them decide to start up Luna Chan, Cyrus said they wanted to introduce a new way of enjoying food. “Because Tasmania doesn’t have many Taiwanese food options–they’re limited, and since we miss home and we can’t travel yet, we would like to share something we like and something we love to other people,” he added.

“We were just excited because we like to cook and we do well in cooking. So, we decided to start a business and we’ll just see how it will go. So, to start with we started up a food truck; because it had a lesser cost to begin with. And after 3 years, people now know who we are and what we offer.”

To give you a clear picture of their menu, their products diversely range from oyster dishes, fried chicken, noodles, waffles, burgers, and such, all for very reasonable prices. Currently, their best-sellers include their bao buns and Taiwanese pancakes, but even Cyrus had a hard time distinguishing their best-sellers because people just love how diverse their offers are (you might just need to try them all).

With that Flannelette curtain firmly moving further and further into the northern suburbs and Since a lot of must-try restaurants are popping around the area of Moonah, we asked how Luna chan stands out from the rest, and here’s what Cyrus had to say:

“I think our market is more of young professionals or young family people. We have a big space because we want our customers to have both a fun and worth it dining experience. We offer Asian fusion food which is not traditional; instead, we incorporate a modern style to introduce the culture of Asia including street food and drinking.”

Currently, as per Cyrus, the customers’ response by far is excellent and he also shared that they have been receiving a lot of positive reviews on Facebook and Google.

Looking back, prior to starting this business, Cyrus and Eva gained experience already in the hospitality field. As mentioned a before, they started their business venture by opening a food truck business in 2017 named “Chan Bao” which is still operating currently. And if you’ve been to any event or festivals that ‘Chan Bao’ was at, you would definitely notice the large line up of people clamoring for a piece of their delicious wares.

With Chan Bao, they visited and went to different festivals, private catering, and some Friday night markets in Hobart, until they decided to start Luna Chan. “We just wanted to create a new fixed location and offer more than just what a food truck can offer such as Asian Street food style and dine-in experience,” as explained by Cyrus.

Of course, we didn’t let our conversation end without asking Cyrus their “secret” ingredient in putting together such a unique business. Here’s his response:

“At this moment, I think we’re still developing and we’re still finding the best strategy. The goal is we just want to try and see. Because if we don’t try, we will not see.”

Indirect yet meaningful.

“If you want to start, you should know whether you’ll like it or not. It requires quite a lot of hard work. Sometimes, it doesn’t make any sense at all, but you should be enjoying what you do. Maybe you should initially consider that. It’s hard to make a commitment as well, both to time and to your customers. But first things first, you should really be happy with what you’re doing,” he concluded.

You can visit Luna Chan at 127A Main Road, Moonah and make sure to try their specialties! They’re open from Wednesdays to Sundays to satisfy your taste buds’ craving during lunch or dinner.
