Something big is coming to the Northern Suburbs—and it’s more than just four new basketball courts. The newly approved Glenorchy Sports Centre, a $28 million development adjacent to Claremont College, is set to become a vibrant, inclusive hub for sport, community, and connection.
With construction moving ahead thanks to the Glenorchy City Council and support from the State Government, this long-anticipated project brings with it not just new facilities, but new energy to the northern suburbs.
A Hub for Everyone
The new sports centre will feature four indoor multi-sport courts, spectator seating, modern change rooms (including a Changing Places facility), EV charging stations, and flexible community spaces. It’s a centre built for more than games—it’s for growth, connection, and opportunity.
Mayor Sue Hickey welcomed the approval, noting that Glenorchy has seen a surge in basketball interest, especially with the popularity of the JackJumpers NBL team. “We need to provide infrastructure to support community-based sport or risk losing kids who are keen to have a go,” she said. The facility will also cater to futsal, volleyball, netball, and a range of wheelchair sports, creating a truly inclusive environment.
Importantly, the centre includes space for club activities, events, and broader community gatherings—a vital step in building strong local organisations and keeping families connected.

Glenorchy- A Sporting City on the Rise
Glenorchy has always had a proud sporting culture. From the Glenorchy District Football Club to the Glenorchy Knights and local cricket and netball clubs, there’s a long-standing commitment to grassroots sport. Facilities like King George V Sports Ground, Eady Street Soccer Ground, and the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool have served the community for decades.
The new sports centre is the next chapter. Positioned right beside Claremont College, it’s perfectly placed to serve students, families, and clubs from right across the municipality. Whether it’s a weekend comp, a midweek training session, or a casual shootaround, the Glenorchy Sports Centre is shaping up to be the go-to destination for indoor sport in greater Hobart.
More Than Just Sport
While the courts and goals are impressive, it’s the broader impact that excites us. This development isn’t just about playing games—it’s about building stronger, healthier, and more connected communities.
By providing inclusive access to high-quality indoor sporting facilities, the Glenorchy Sports Centre gives local youth a positive outlet, supports community wellbeing, and promotes active lifestyles. It also opens the door to greater participation in organised sport for people of all ages and abilities—including those involved in wheelchair basketball, netball, futsal, and other adaptive sports.
The centre’s multi-purpose community spaces also mean it will be more than a sports venue. It will be a place where local clubs can host meetings and events, families can come together, and organisations can engage with the public. It’s a vital piece of social infrastructure that helps bring people together beyond the sporting field.
From a property perspective, developments like this consistently enhance the liveability and appeal of surrounding areas. When families consider where to live, access to high-quality recreational and community facilities is a top priority. With this centre on the way, Glenorchy continues to position itself as a family-friendly, amenity-rich location within Greater Hobart. This kind of investment adds long-term value to the suburb and helps attract new buyers, renters, and investors alike.
The Glenorchy Sports Centre isn’t just a boost for sport—it’s a catalyst for local pride, community spirit, and future growth.

It’s great to see our city stepping forward with something that brings real long-term value to families and the broader community.”
At 4one4 Property Co., we’re always excited to see projects that bring value to our community—and this one ticks all the boxes.
