Hobart’s Next Big Coffee District

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT // District B Coffee Specialty Coffee

More than a cup of drink, for some, coffee is like music to their ears or a fireworks display at a distance–satisfying and relaxing. Mornings become more BREW-tiful with coffee, don’t you agree? How about we explore a newly-opened neighborhood coffee shop in Moonah? We bet you’re gonna love it a LATTE! (oops, sorry for the puns; too many coffees this morning 😉 we got way too excited!)

Whether you’re in it for a work meeting, catching up with friends or family, or perhaps, you just really, really want that daily boost of caffeine, District B Specialty Coffee is the new place to be! The moment you step in your feet through the door, that aroma of freshly brewed coffee will welcome you, and the warm anda cosy vibe of the place will definitely make you stay. You wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity, too, to take even a quick snap  of its highly instagrammable aesthetic (even if the store is currently under renovation still- can you believe that for years this was once a fish & Ship shop?!)

If you’re curious about its name, we had a chance to speak with the coffee shop’s laid back and friendly owner, Turuu- he revealed that the letter “B” in “District B” stands for the street in Mongolia where he grew up. He shared that starting a coffee shop business has always been his dream, and whilst mastering the art of making the perfect coffee as a barista before opening  up his own shop, he says “I want to look at it just like I’m working here, instead of owning it. It’s a trick to take it easy and stress less.”

Turuu, laid-back and friendly owner, straight into getting to know his new regulars

Aside from wowing people straight out of the gate with their best-selling coffee, people have been coming back every day because of the pigeon whole pastries and egg & bacon brioche bun they offer. Just a quick tip: their Single O coffee is best paired with their pigeon whole pastries. (we can definitely attest- yummy in the tummy!!!!)

As for Turuu, it will always be quality over quantity. “I do not want to offer so many things; I just want to offer a few things which are of good quality,” he explained. He also mentioned that he wants his customers to savor not only the products that they offer, but also the relaxing environment which is suitable for any agenda for a day.

Without a doubt, the lowering of the Flannelette Curtain (if you, don’t know about the curtain- don’t worry, we have a blog post in the works to help with that too)  Moonah is becoming more and more popular around Hobart  because of the must-try cafes and restaurants popping up in the area, with District B adding to the list. When asked about what sets it apart from the other coffee shops, Turuu explained that if compared, District B sits nicely in between “Shake a Leg Jr” and “Straight Up”. It aims to cater to more people in the growing Moonah suburb; encouraging them to spend a moment inside their shop primarily to have fun.

This coffee shop also encourages the practice of sustainability. (this is a plus point!) “We try to use packaging products that are biodegradable. We have separate bins where people can throw their garbage at and then we take these to Centigrade to make it a compost,” Turuu shared. Another way to encourage people to be sustainable, which the shop is also currently doing, is through giving discounts to customers who bring their own cups.”That’s one way to encourage customers to use less takeaway cups,” he said.

District B has just started operating last 7th of June, yet many people are already coming back to the store each day (including many of the coffee loving members of our Team here at 4one4 Property Co.). Turuu, The owner, also said that they already have regular customers, which he knows not just from their faces, but also their respective names. In the long run, he aims that his coffee shop will be a big part of the community of Moonah. With this, he revealed that soon, District B will be hosting some friendly competitions and events for everyone. “I’m not gonna ask money from the host; they can use the venue to organize their events. I just want people to hang around and make friends,” he added.

The dream of going from Barista to Business owner wasn’t the easiest to pull off; Turuu shared that the process was a rough road to take, but one he thinks will be worthwhile in the long run. From finding a commercial space, renovating the place, doing paper works, to organizing everything; it was a massive undertaking for a brand new business owner. But anything that is worth working is worth having. Regardless, “I still need to learn a lot as a new business owner,” he ended.

Fantastic coffee, beautiful place, environmental-friendly, and good quality service. What more could you ask for? Make sure to put “District B” in your must-try list the next time you’re getting a punch of caffeine. (you won’t regret it)

The store is located at 96 Albert Road, Moonah, and is open every 6am to 4pm during weekdays… oh and did we mention that they are open on the weekends too (another massive WIN!!! Gotta Love that weekend Coffee fix!!!) Pop on in from 7am to 3pm on Saturdays & Sundays!

If you can, don’t forget to bring your own cup! (*wink)
