Imagine a quarter pipe that’s ready to launch riders into the stratosphere, and a bunch of bars, ledges, and curbs that are basically playgrounds for skaters. This masterpiece also comes with a brand-new toilet block (because even skaters need to take breaks) and a chill grassy spot where you can kick back and watch the action unfold.

Montrose Skatepark isn’t stopping at just street vibes. It’s also taking skateboarding to epic new heights with a mind-blowing concrete 1.8 m deep skate bowl. The bowl’s kidney-shaped curves flow like a dream, and dropping in feels smooth like butter. Whether you’re a rookie or a seasoned pro looking for that extra edge, this bowl is tailor-made for all bowl-skating fanatics.

But hold on, there’s more.

Beyond being a mere space for indulging in your passion for skating, this recreational facility presents a chance to create cherished moments with your near and dear family. Situated incredibly close to the skatepark (practically adjacent to it), you’ll find the Montrose Foreshore Community Park, which has recently undergone some upgrades (click here to explore other recently revitalised play spaces in the vicinity).

It’s an ideal setting to gather the entire family for enjoyable activities, and what could be more delightful than organising a barbecue or picnic by the waterfront during the long summer months while watching the skaters do their flips and tricks? This and other more exciting family adventures are in store for you at Montrose Skatepark!

Montrose Skate Park’s Own Adventures

Four years in the making, the idea to build a quality skatepark for the community sparked in late 2019. The Council got everyone involved in a community engagement to chat about the preferred location for the new skatepark along with the awesome features to be included. After hearing everyone’s thoughts, the Council gave a big thumbs up to the Montrose Foreshore as the top choice.

Back in 2020, they threw out some early concept sketches for the skate park during the Montrose Playspace consultation. The feedback pointed to the necessity for additional community input in nailing down the nitty-gritty details of the skatepark design.

Cooked up by the skatepark gurus at CONVIC, the final design is like the ultimate skateboarding fantasy come to life. And here’s the juicy part: this design didn’t just drop out of nowhere. It’s the product of a real community effort. They went all in with a two-stage plan to make sure everyone had their say. The local legends, the skateboarding crew, and the big players who care about this place were all invited to toss in their two cents about what this dream skatepark should be.

They kicked things off with a get-together back in July 2021 at the Glenorchy Rowing Club. And get this – even though pesky COVID had its lockdowns going on, the smart folks from Victoria who designed this magic made it all happen over a video call. People came together to share ideas, draw up blueprints like pros, and they even got artsy with playdough to sculpt their perfect skatepark visions. Meanwhile, the designers dropped wisdom bombs about their craft and what tricky spots they might run into. Follow up meetings and consultations were held after that and the rest, before the construction phase, is history.

It’s like a skatepark creation story straight out of a movie.

Glenorchy’s Mayor, Bec Thomas, in a published article in Glenorchy Gazette, gave a big shout-out to the fresh design of the skatepark and the whole consultation process.

“The Montrose skatepark project shows how [the] Council and the community can work together to achieve a fantastic outcome with strong support from the groups that will be using the facility.”

Fast forward to March 2023, the construction commenced until it was finally completed and opened for use in August 2023. The official opening, as we mentioned in the earlier paragraphs, will be on the 16th of September.

In case you’re wondering, the cash flow for this skatepark is pretty sweet. We’re talking about a cool $250,000 grant from the Department of Communities, another $250,000 coming in hot from the Department of Health, and to top it off, a solid $120,000 courtesy of the Federal Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Grant Program.

What does this have to do with real estate?

The opening of Montrose Skatepark does not only benefit the fun and thrill-seekers, but it also has the potential to bring about various positive effects for both the real estate sector and the local community.

Meticulously kept public amenities like skateparks can elevate the overall attractiveness of a neighbourhood. This might result in a surge in the desire for properties in the surrounding area, potentially causing property values to rise.

Prospective home purchasers, particularly families with a keen interest in skateboarding, could be inclined to invest more in residences situated near leisure amenities like the Montrose Skatepark.

Should it gain more popularity, the Montrose Skatepark has the potential to evolve into a sought-after hub for skateboarding enthusiasts hailing from neighbouring regions or even more distant locations.

This influx of visitors holds the capacity to promote tourism and local businesses, as people spend money on accommodation, dining, retail, and various recreational pursuits. This tourist influx stands to enrich the local economy, potentially fostering the real estate industry for both short-term rentals and long-term residency.

Lastly, the idea that it took a village to build the Montrose Skatepark perceives the community in a positive light. Getting everyone involved in the process is truly a plus point that a lot of people would appreciate. This would attract home buyers and investors to join such a united community and be part of future local projects.
